The Ground Rules for Running a Business

The Ground Rules for Running a Business

Do you like reading self-help articles? Me? Meh, sometimes, but in the early stages of building this website, I came across an excellent list of Ground Rules. They're republished here with the permission of Teleadvice. These have created a kind of framework for keeping the business and my personal obligations in perspective.

  1. I am 100% responsible for my actions. I will not blame or justify.
  2. I make every attempt to be proactive in order to take advantage of opportunities.
  3. I spend 15 minutes each day expanding my knowledge through reading, studying and listening.
  4. I benefit the most from pursuing and achieving my goals.
  5. The only way I will not succeed is if I do not have a vision or a plan, or if I do not follow my ground rules.
  6. I overwhelm myself with positive thoughts and feelings so that I have limited space for negative thoughts and feelings.
  7. I set goals, I plan around my goals, and I reward myself when I reach my goals. I set daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term goals.
  8. I reflect on the previous day and plan for the next.
  9. I recognize what others do right and look for opportunities to praise.
  10. I make only clear agreements I plan to keep. When I can not fulfill, I reconcile with the appropriate person at the earliest opportunity.
  11. I take criticism without being offended and learn from my mistakes. I give constructive criticism without malicious intent.
  12. I like to smile, I enjoy being generous, and I am always sincere.
  13. I provide people with what my expectations are of them and ask for their expectations of me.
  14. I have but one chance to make a first impression.
  15. I never compromise opportunities to spend time with my children and family or to give back to others.

What do you use to keep your business, and yourself, centered?
